A Kitchen Remodel … and More

Kitchen Remodel, Ann Arbor, Michigan

This Ann Arbor-area home, more than 40 years old, has served its owners well, but was in need of a serious update – not just to improve the interior appearance, but also to make it work better for the current owners. The project started as a kitchen remodel by our sister company, Homeowner Services of America (HSA), also headquartered in Saline. Soon, the owners were so pleased with the work from HSA and us, they asked us to add, first, the family room to the project – and then the laundry, mudroom, and half bath.

HSA began in the kitchen by removing the existing cabinets, counters, and appliances. The next step was to remove the soffits and the pantry closet so the new cabinets could go to the ceiling. The drywall was repaired and oak flooring to match the family room was installed. First Design Cabinetry furnished and installed the cabinets – in the Diamond, Distinction, Bailey, cherry style with a Brierwood finish.

The kitchen counters are Cambria, Whitehall – fabricated and installed by Lakeside. The cabinet hardware, from Richelieu, has an Antique English finish. The appliances are from Whirlpool; they were provided by the client. Light fixtures came from Ferguson and Top of the Lamp. The back splashes are a marble tile laid in the subway style.

While working on the kitchen, HSA noted to the owner that we could integrate the family room by simply removing the door and a small portion of the wall dividing the two spaces. That led to the removal of the family room’s dark paneling and to a better cabinet and shelving arrangement. We also installed crown molding and built a fireplace mantel in the same wood and finish as the Diamond, Distinction, Bailey, Maple, Cider finish cabinets provided by First Design Cabinetry.

We then moved into the laundry, mudroom and half bath area. All affected spaces were painted to help the various areas flow together and create the appearance of a great room. There were many other steps required to complete the work – more than we have space to describe here. The result is a lovely space – and a very happy client.
