Better – and Brighter – Use of Space

Kitchen Remodel, Saline, Michigan

The owners of this Saline bungalow needed to replace their kitchen due to water damage from a burst pipe. This provided an opportunity to improve the layout of the cabinets and appliances and to increase the functionality of the space.

The owners worked with David Rhoads – owner of both First Design Cabinetry and our sister company, Homeowner Services of America (HSA), in Saline – to design the new kitchen. Removing soffits provided space for more cabinetry; it also visually expanded the kitchen. Moving the refrigerator allowed for a pantry cabinet. Other appliances were relocated to provide more uninterrupted counter space – much appreciated by the owners.

The homeowners selected Diamond cabinets to replace the old built-in-place cabinets. Their new cabinets provide quiet-close doors and drawers, roll-out shelves, and other amenities not previously available. The cabinets are maple, Anden style, custom painted to match an item selected by the homeowners. Doors of six of the wall cabinets were modified to accept stained glass panels recovered from the old kitchen.

Granite counters replaced the laminate counters. Also added: an under-mount double-bowl sink in stainless steel. Oak flooring was installed to replace the vinyl flooring. The oak was finished on site to provide a more water-resistant finish. Under-cabinet lights were installed for task lighting, and additional ceiling lighting was placed to provide better general illumination.

The new kitchen is better laid out, lighter, and brighter. A much more pleasant space to be!
