Kitchen and Dining Room Combined
An Ann Arbor-area pair had finally found the home they wanted, satisfying all of their requirements, at a price they could afford… but for one thing: the galley kitchen. It was too confining, and it was separated from the dining room by a full-height wall.
Their realtor suggested contacting David Rhoads of First Design Cabinetry, before moving in, to explore ways to modify the kitchen and dining area. David helped plan to remove the dividing wall and reposition some existing cabinets and the refrigerator on a previously vacant wall in the former eating space. A header was installed to transfer the removed wall’s load from the second floor to new columns in the basement. This ensured the structural integrity. The wood floor was then extended from the dining room into the kitchen and eating space.
An island was created using Diamond Distinction maple cabinets in the Selena style, with a Whiskey Black finish. The previous laminate counters were replaced with Cielo de Oro granite. The granite on the island was extended into the dining area in a graceful arc to create a seating area at the island.
The owners are now fully satisfied with their new home, and they are looking forward to entertaining friends in their newly combined and opened-up kitchen and dining area.
